History of MetroWikiEdit
This Wiki was originally started by Metrobits on March 15, 2006. It was created with a purpose as stated in the official description on Wikia Central:
- The metro Wikia is about subway systems and will be a resource about subways, or metros, and subway station architecture around the world.
The creator of the Wiki never made any edits after originally creating it, and the Wiki was found inactive in November 2006, and formally adopted by BRG on November 22, 2006. At this time, it was decided to expand its purpose. Subway systems are often operated by operators of, and coordinated with, other urban public transit modalities. Because of this it will not be considered off topic to discuss these, so that pages on bus, streetcar, and similar facilities may be found in this Wiki.
- is a specialized encyclopedia about urban and suburban transit systems
- covers subways, buses, streetcars, and all other sorts of urban public transit
- as of April 24, 2019, now has 2,310 articles which have been created for this Wiki
Differences from WikipediaEdit
Many articles in this Wiki have been copied from Wikipedia. As time goes by, of course, these pages will be edited by different people than those who will edit the original pages on Wikipedia, and the content will diverge. But this is not the main reason that MetroWiki and Wikipedia will differ.
Since this is a specialized collection, it will not contain any articles that do not directly refer to transit operators, transit systems, or other transit-related topics. When creating articles for MetroWiki, contributors who feel that there is value in referencing a page in Wikipedia that is not strictly transit-related can do so, by using the [[Wikipedia:article name|linking text]] construct. (Incidentally, one can link from Wikipedia articles to MetroWiki pages in a similar manner, by using the [[Wikia:metro:article name|linking text]] construct.)
On the other hand, this specialization means that articles that are too specialized for Wikipedia are welcome here. Articles that have been deleted from Wikipedia on "non-notability" grounds will not be considered off-limits, if they concern urban or suburban mass transit. An article on a minor bus company, even if so detailed as to give more space than Wikipedia gives to much larger operators, would not be out of place in MetroWiki, and contributions of this nature are welcome and encouraged.
