Introduction[]
Beijing Subway Line 1, the first subway line in both Beijing and China, it's iconic color is red. The line generally runs east-west, passing through six districts of the Chinese capital: Shijingshan, Haidian, Xicheng, Dongcheng, Chaoyang, and Tongzhou.
In June 1950, the outbreak of the Korean War drew the year-old People's Republic of China into the conflict. Against this international backdrop, military preparedness naturally became a primary consideration in Beijing's urban planning. Chinese leaders drew inspiration from the strategic defense functions demonstrated by the Moscow Metro during World War II. When German forces advanced on Moscow in 1941, the six-year-old subway system not only served as shelters for civilians but also housed the Soviet military's wartime command center. This precedent led Chinese policymakers to envision constructing an underground railway system with dual civilian and defense purposes.
Construction commenced on July 1, 1965, and was completed on September 20, 1969. Trial operations began in 1971, followed by formal public inauguration on September 15, 1981. A significant upgrade occurred on August 29, 2021, when the line was integrated with the Batong Line to form a continuous east-west artery. As of 2025, Beijing Subway Line 1 (including the Batong Line) has a total length of 52.7 kilometers and 36 stations
