History[]

The construction of first Athens Metro line (then called "Athens-Piraeus Railway") started in 1867 by the English businessman Edward Pickering. The line opened in 1869 with a length of 8,5km and 2 stations, between Thisio and Piraeus. In 1882, two stations opened between Thisio and Piraeus. In 1895, the line was extended to Omonia with two more stations. The Piraeus-Thisio part was electrified in 1904, while the Thisio-Omonia part was electrified in 1930. In 1928, Kallthea station was opened between the stations of Moschato and Thisio. Despite the destruction after the World War II and the Greek civil war, the line was extended firstly to Victoria in 1948, and then to Attiki in 1949. During the late 1950s, the line almost tripled it's lenght. In 1954, The Kato Petralona station opened between Kallithea and Thisio. In 1956, it was extended from Attiki to Nea Ionia with 6 new stations and in 1957 it reached it's current terminus, Kifissia, with 3 new stations. In 1961, Agios Eleftherios station opened between Kato Patissia and Ano Patissia. In 1983, Irini station opened between Iraklio and Maroussi in order to serve the newly-constructed Athens Olympic Complex. In 1989, two new stations opened. Tavros-Eleftherios Venizelos between Kallithea and Kato Petralona, and KAT between Kifissia and Maroussi. In 1992, after many years of planning, the construction of lines 2 and 3 started. The two lines finally opened eight years later, on the January 27th, 2000 with line 2 between Sepolia and Syntagma with 7 stations, and line 3 between Syntagma and Ethniki Amyna with 7 stations. The first day, almost 1.000.000 passengers used the metro, almost the 1/4 of Athens' population. On November of 2000, line 2 was expanded from Syntagma to Dafni with 5 new stations. In 2003, line 3 was expanded to Monastiraki. In 2004, many expansions were opened to the public due to the 2004 Summer Olympics. Nerantziotissa station opened between Maroussi and Irini, in order to serve The Mall Athens. Line 2 was expanded towards Agios Antonios on the north and Agios Dimitrios-Alexandros Panagoulis on the south. Line 3 was expanded from Ethniki Amyna to the Athens International Airport with 6 new stations, 4 of which were shared with the Athens Suburban Railway. In 2007, line 3 was expanded from Monastiraki to Egaleo with 3 new stations. In 2009, Nomismatokopio station opened on line 3, between Ethniki Amyna and Halandri. In 2010, two more stations were added on line 3, Holargos between Ethniki Amyna and Nomismatokopio, and Agia Paraskevi between Nomosmatokopio and Halandri. In 2013, Line 2 was expanded from Agios Antonios to Anthoupoli with two new stations and from Agios Dimitrios-Alexandros Panagoulis to Elliniko with 4 new stations. On the December of the same year, line 3 was expanded to Agia Marina.
